Where: Backstage at an afternoon Sunday variety show

Who: Lead Star of Soap and Kontrabida of Soap

Lead Star of Soap (LSS) and Kontrabida of Soap (KS) were preparing for a dance number to promote a new teleserye. Both artists were asked to bring “black flowing dresses” for the production number. However, KS was unable to bring one at the last minute. Instead, she brought other black pieces of clothing to mix and match. Fortunately for LSS, she had a personal stylist who was able to provide the dress. She looked beautiful in her outfit, which was a bit more formal than what KS was able to come up with. KS had on a pair of leggings, a tank top, and a lace top her best friend (also part of the show) lent her.

Backstage, a few minutes before the number, KS saw LSS hastily putting on a pair of leggings as well. This confused KS because she knew LSS had already rehearsed in her dress and looked absolutely fantabulous! And the leggings did not exactly add to the look. So KS asks, “Why are you putting on leggings pa? Maganda na naman yung suot mo ah!” LSS says, “Para sana may kaparehas ka. Para kahit papaano terno tayo.” Huwhaaat??? KS couldn’t believe what LSS was doing: she was selflessly dressing down just so KS wouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being underdressed!  Awww… :) KS was so touched by her kindness. She said  “Okay lang ako girl. Perfect na yung suot mo kanina! You don’t have to wear the leggings para damayan ako.” And LSS only relented after much insisting. Wow. :)

But seriously, I just felt like I had to share this encounter with you guys.

This industry can be toxic sometimes. In a world where gossip is the language, flaws are hyped and scandals are fabricated, I can understand why many artists keep their guards up. 

But every once in a while, you come across an artist who has not  succumbed to the culture of putting on a show even off cam. You come across someone who looks like she might turn into a good friend some day. And I am reminded that kindness and beauty and goodness are just there. They are EVERYWHERE. But you must choose to see it first. Today, I’m the lucky recipient of such kindness. :) 

This small gesture might seem insignificant to some. But for me and the other artists who are constantly judged for a living, it’s a reminder to have faith in the goodness of people. :)
